Whoever is brave (or foolish) enough to ask me about my hair woes better get ready for a serious rant. My hair is flat, limp, lifeless, without volume, oily, thin, fine,… And that is just the beginning. But what I do like about my hair is that it always has a lovely shine to it and that it’s always in great condition. Dry or damaged hair, split ends, breakage? Normally never an issue for me. Normally, I say, because a few weeks ago during a dull moment at work (read: an it’s-Monday-and-I-don’t-feel-like-getting-into-work-mode-yet moment) I was inspecting the ends of my hair and I counted not one, not two but THREE split ends! And to make things worse not one, not two but like FIVE whole hairs fell out right there in my hand during my little inspection! Call me a drama queen, but I got a little hysterical and decided that it was time for radical action. Lucky for me, in the same week as my little crisis moment I received a lovely package from Shu Uemura with the brand’s four new Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration products. Hah, apparently a little hysteria pays off.
The new Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration range consists of a shampoo, a conditioner, a mask and a serum for ultra-damaged hair. Packed with lotus extract and ceramide to strengthen the intercellular cement of the hair cortex, the products promise to repair, restore and solidify the hair. And they all delicately smell of orange blossom, jasmine and ylang ylang with a subtle woody touch.
I started using the Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration products two weeks ago, and first up was the shampoo. The Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration Shampoo is light, smells shamaaaaaaaazing (sh for shampoo) and contains – get ready for this – ceramide 1000 PPM (parts per million). It cleanses my hair really well, keeps it nice and light, and as it is packed with ceramide it should also give my locks a serious power boost.
After shampooing my hair I use the Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration Conditioner. I apply it from halfway down my lengths all the way down to the ends of my hair. I don’t touch the rest of my hair with the conditioner, though, because I don’t want to weigh it down too much and make it fall even flatter than normal. With an extra 500 PPM ceramide (that’s 1500 PPM in total) the conditioner has some serious restorative and strengthening powers. It also detangles my ridiculously tangly hair (hey look, another hair woe to whine about) really well and just like the shampoo it smells very lovely.
Next up is the Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration Treatment, a deliciously creamy hair mask that comes in a really cute jar. I use the mask once a week, and – as instructed – I leave it in for 5 to 10 minutes. With its ceramide 3000 PPM (more, moaaaaar!) the Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration Treatment is definitely a heavy-weight in the sense that it’s the most powerful but also the richest product from the Ultimate Remedy range. Unlike the conditioner, I use the mask from roots to ends. Yes, this does considerably weigh down my fine hair and it also cuts the time that I can go between washes in half, but the advantages of this intensive mask are just too amazing and I want my hair to benefit as much as possible from the total awesomeness of the product. And going all out pays off, because after the treatment my hair is almost ridiculously soft and shiny. And that’s only the part that you can actually see. Just imagine what this mask does deep inside the hair cortex!
And then there’s the Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration Duo-Serum, a mix of a cream with ceramide 2000 PPM and lotus extract oil that promises to repair and strengthen the hair, to tame frizz and split ends, and to give extra shine. The instructions say that you can’t rinse the product out, and unfortunately that is the reason why this serum and I don’t get along. My hair and leave-in treatments, it just doesn’t work. I tried using the serum in different ways, but every time my hair just turned greasy and fell completely flat in unflattering dirty-looking strands. The smell of the serum is fantastic, definitely, and I’m sure that people with dry hair* will love it, but for me and my fine oily hair this serum is not a good match.
* like my dear mom who always ends up getting my leave-in hair products and who will soon also become the proud owner of this duo-serum, you’re welcome mother
Bottom line? With the exception of the duo-serum, all products from the new Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration line have managed to seriously impress me. I always love it when a brand uses actual science and technology to create new products, but the results already show that these four products do more than just shove impressive numbers (1000! 1500! 2000! OMG 3000!) in our face. My hair definitely looks healthier and shinier than ever before, and I think that after just two weeks it already feels stronger as well. I think that with a little luck that means no more split ends or shedding for me in the future!
The new Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration Shampoo, Conditioner, Treatment and Duo-Serum are sold for approximately 50, 70, 90 and 59 CHF here in Switzerland.
