I know that we’re already one or even two letters further into the beauty alphabet (BB creams are soooo last year) and I know that many people (including myself) are getting pretty tired of the whole hype around BB creams, but bear with me please because I swear that today’s article is not just another BB cream post. So what’s different about it, you ask? Well, the product that I’m reviewing today is not a regular BB cream, but it’s a BB cream for the eye contour. Mid-January Smashbox is launching the brand new Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes, and today I get to show it to you in preview. I told you this would be worth sticking around for, didn’t I?

I think everyone more or less knows by now what BB creams do. They don’t just even out imperfections, but they also hydrate, nourish and protect the skin. And the same goes for Smashbox’s new Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes: it’s an eye cream and an under eye concealer in one that nourishes the eye contour but also evens out and brightens up the skin in that area. Smashbox describes the new Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes as a 5-in-1 product that at the same time hydrates, protects, perfects, corrects and illuminates the eye contour. Nice claims, but does the product really live up to the expectations? Let’s find out.

Claim 1 – Hydrate

The Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes is more than an under eye concealer, because apart from color pigment it also contains moisturizing ingredients like chamomile extract, caffeine and hyaluronate that hydrate the skin and keep it moisturized around the clock. Normally I use eye cream and eye primer under my under eye concealer, but with the Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream Eyes I can skip that step because it keeps my skin moisturized all on its own. So it definitely hydrates the skin, great!

Claim 2 – Protect

The Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes contains SPF15 in the form of octinoxate, titanium oxide and zinc oxide. So it contains mineral sunscreen, which is great because mineral sunscreen is way more effective than chemical sunscreen. I would have liked to see a higher SPF, but hey, SPF 15 is better than no sun protection at all.

Claim 3 – Perfect

To perfect the eye contour… what does that even mean? I guess it means that the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. I haven’t used the product long enough to see any real changes or improvements yet, but the caffeine and hyaluronate in the formula could definitely diminish fine lines and wrinkles. I say could, because it’s too early to see any real results at this point. That would take more time.

Claim 4 – Correct

By this they probably mean that the product corrects or evens out skin discolorations. I don’t really have dark circles under my eyes – phew – but after a short night I can definitely use a little help to get rid of the grayish dull skin under my eyes. And the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream is perfect for that. The problem that I usually have with BB creams is that they don’t provide enough coverage to even out my skin, but the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes contains more than enough pigment to cover dark circles and dull-looking skin. Awesome!

Claim 5 – Illuminate

Not only getting plenty of sleep, but also using an under eye concealer in a shade lighter than your foundation can make your eyes look brighter and more awake. I have the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes in the color Light/Medium which is basically a perfect match for my skin, so it doesn’t really brighten up my eye contour. For that I would need to go a shade lighter. But the formula definitely contains enough pigment to have an illuminating effect on the eye contour (a bit like the YSL Touche Eclat), as long as you use a color that’s a bit lighter than your own skin tone.Preview (Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes) (6)

Bottom line?

Five promises of which three are clearly being kept, one is hard to judge at this point, and one would probably be kept if I used the product in a lighter shade. Not bad. I never really got sucked into the whole BB cream hype, but I am more than happy to give this BB cream for the eye contour from Smashbox a spot in my make-up bag!

The Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes will be available mid-January in five shades. It will be sold exclusively at Marionnaud for 34 CHF.

Are you a BB cream fanatic? Have you ever tried a BB cream for the eye contour?

  1. You look gorgeous girl!! X

  2. I can’t say I was sucked into the BB hype but did like the one I tried for the convenience so I’ll probably try a few more. This for the eye area is super interesting and I might have a go at it when it comes out! :)

  3. I am a bit tired of companies slapping BB, CC, and whatever other alphabet in front of a product, but if it works, it works! I like how natural this looks on you! Glad to hear it hydrates so well!

  4. I must admit I like BB creams, esp. the Garnier one. But of course, Smashbox always comes up with these innovative products, and now, we get the BB cream for eyes, which I’m kinda actually really looking forward to. Great review:)

  5. I like BB Creams for eyes. That is very interesting. BB Creams as a face foundation? Don’t know…
There are too much and too much worse… I am a big fan of the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturzer and this is actually a BB Cream. Thank you for the post…sometimes a forget smashbox…

  6. Yesterday I stood in line at our popular cosmetic store and to make time pass faster, I was reading about different makeup. I saw the BB cream and thought…what would Melissa say about this? I dont have any and didnt know what it was until reading this post. Im ona mission for a great sensitive skin serum. Have you ever reviewed LaRoche Posay? It was used on my skin for a facial and I loved it. Now Im thinking of investing in the entire line.

    • Hehe, that is just awesome that you immediately thought of me :-D As for La Roche Posay, I haven’t reviewed the brand on the blog yet, but I’m definitely a fan. I’ve tried many of their face creams, and they’re amazing at treating specific skin problems. I really like pharmacy brands in general, really. They may not look as glamorous as high-end products, but they do deliver and you can usually really trust on them to do their job.

  7. Great review! This BB cream for the eyes is calling my name. I haven’t tried any product from smashbox yet but I could totally see myself trying this one. Thanks for the review!

  8. I’ve never really taken up with BB cream, but reading this makes me feel I should at least give a sample a chance haha. My skin is crap right now because I think I’m having an allergic reaction to either the cold or dog hair, but I need to try this some day!

  9. I haven’t gotten sucked into the BB hole either. I tried a few of them out and none of them made any difference, they’re all too light and ‘fluffy’ so why even bother?? But it would be nice to brighten up my eyes, I’m not getting enough sleep these days, there’s so much fun stuff happening at night everywhere.:D

  10. De resultaten liegen er niet om! Wow, I am impressed.
