Those of you who read my Vichy review earlier this month may remember that I can keep my skin’s oil production under control a bit better nowadays. My skin isn’t completely shine-free yet, but I definitely see improvement. I still suffer from impurities though. Every day a new zit or bump appears, and my skin is never 100% acne-free. So a few weeks ago I decided to buy a zit zapper to locally treat my blemishes.
I bought the Garnier Pure SOS Pen, a zit zapper with zinc, eucalyptus and vitamin B3 that claims to dry out blemishes in 5 hours. The Garnier Pure SOS Pen comes in a small 10 ml tube and has a transparent, slightly sticky gel texture with – and I quote – ‘extra strength’. Sounds promising, right? Yeah, that’s what I thought too…
When I used the SOS Pen for the first time, I felt the product sting a bit on my skin. ‘Awesome,’ I thought, ‘this thing is already working!’ While I continued getting ready for bed I was already fantasizing about my soon-to-be perfectly clear skin. When I woke up the next morning and looked in the mirror I couldn’t believe my eyes. The appearance of my skin had changed alright, but not in a good way. The two or three spots that I had treated the night before had multiplied like a nest of rabbits on Viagra: my whole face was covered in acne!
I was obviously not amused by the result, but I decided to get over it, cover up the damage with make-up and go on with my day. I didn’t want to give up on the product straight away, so I continued to use it for another couple of nights, hoping that my skin just needed to adjust to it. But nope, the situation just got worse. Instead of getting rid of my impurities, the product gave me more and more breakouts, cystic acne and red spots all over my face. After five days or so I finally gave up, but as I’m writing this I can still see the aftermath of the war that raged on my face! %&?@!* !!!

I analyzed the entire ingredient list of the product and as far as I know I’m not allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients in the gel, but there is clearly something in the Garnier Pure SOS Pen that has a devastating effect on my skin. How a product that claims to ‘zap away’ zits in a matter of hours can have the exact opposite effect really beats me. But I do know this: after this nightmare experience I’m so over synthetic anti-acne treatments. I’m going for the natural approach now, which is why I ordered a bottle of 100% pure tea tree oil online. Fingers crossed, I guess…
Maybe it’s me, I don’t know, but the Garnier Pure SOS Pen is officially going in the bin. Adieu, so long, and please don’t come back.
