Make-Up Look | Brown + Burgundy Smokey Eyes

You’re probably getting sick of me constantly posting looks featuring my Coastal Scents Custom Eyeshadow Palette, but I just can’t help it. I love my Coastal Scents Hot Pots! That’s the beauty of putting together your own eyeshadow palette: every single shade you pick is a shade you’ll love and use and – in my case – throw at people’s faces every chance you get. Today’s look features shimmery golden brown and red on the eyes paired with a peachy nude on the lips. Take a look!

Let’s start with eyes. I went with Coastal Scents Boca Mocha – a shimmery golden brown – on the eyelid and Coastal Scents Pomegranate Red – a matte red – in the outer corner of the eyes and crease. Blending Pomegranate Red into Boca Mocha makes it look less pure red and more burgundy, and turns it into a perfect color match for the Makeup Geek Full Spectrum Eye Liner Pencil in Plumeria that I’m wearing on my lower waterline. I completed the eye look by smudging a bit of Coastal Scents Chocolatier against my lower waterline, highlighting my inner eye corner with Coastal Scents Snow Bunny and applying a lick of mascara (Maybelline Volum’ Express Colossal Smoky Eyes Mascara) and a subtle wing just in the outer corners of my eyes (Sephora Fingertip Eyeliner).

On my skin I’m wearing my trusted combination of the Milani Conceal + Perfect 2-in-1 Foundation + Concealer and the Morphe Banana Powder, and for blush I went with Crochet from my Sleek Blush By 3 Lace Blush Palette. And on my lips is the Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Nude Beach, a subtle peachy nude that balances out the heavy eye look.

What do you think of the look? Do you have a favorite eyeshadow palette?

Get Ready With Me | Warm Smokey Eyes + Peach Lips

Those of you who saw my latest vlog know that earlier this month I went to Zürich for the Clinique Pep-Start party. I already included a little make-up teaser in the vlog, but for all my fellow make-up junkies out there I’m now also sharing the full Get Ready With Me version yappity yap A to Z version with lots of chit chat. Take a look!

Get Ready With Me | Gold & Brown Smokey Eyes + Pink Lips

Those of who you saw Thursday’s vlog know that the hubby and I spent an amazing night at the Royal Savoy in Lausanne the other week to celebrate the hotel’s grand opening. And believe it or not, I actually did more than stuff my face and party the night away. I also recorded a Get Ready With Me video, despite feeling pretty hungover from all the champagne and cocktails from the night before. How’s that for commitment, eh? Since my man was still snoozing when I was doing my make-up I had to make it silent video, but I captioned everything, so take a look!

Two Dashes of Glam | High School Make-up

I can’t believe it’s been 11 years since I graduated high school. ELEVEN YEARS. What kind of old fuck am I?! It’s kind of depressing, especially because it all feels like it was yesterday. So does that mean I’d rewind time and go back to my high school years if I could? No. I wasn’t exactly popular and along with not yet knowing how to ignore meanies I also hadn’t learned how to properly do make-up yet. That much was clear when I was going through old high school photos for today’s Two Dashes of Glam collaboration. Yep, this month my beautiful blogging buddy Natasja and I are showing you our signature high school looks. Let’s spread some embarrassment, shall we?

My black smokey eyes

Two Dashes of Glam (Signature High School Make-up) (2)

✿ September 2005, rocking flared jeans and a mighty cool choker on the garden steps. ✿

Most girls gradually get into make-up and start off with just a bit of mascara and lip gloss before transitioning to more complicated stuff, but somehow I managed to skip that step and immediately went for the black smokey eye look. I wasn’t very good at it though. I used only one eyeshadow – I don’t even remember what brand it was, all that mattered was that it was black – and I just applied it using the sponge applicator that came with it. Blending? Had no idea what that was. A blending brush? Wouldn’t discover it for years to come.

✿ June 2005, enduring the heat wave. I really loved that outfit. ✿

So that was me, the girl sporting heavy unblended black eyeshadow and black eye pencil. Every day. And sometimes even every night, because more often than not I was too lazy to take it all off at night. Oh if I only I could slap my past self. But at the time I just couldn’t be bothered. Plus I kind of dug the grungy morning-after look.

✿ July 2004, thinking hard about my roll in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. ✿

I also didn’t bother with face make-up. I didn’t try my first foundation until I was in college and it wasn’t until I was in my mid-twenties that I first started experimenting with blush. High school me didn’t even think to apply mascara. My lashes were black already anyway so what was the point, I reasoned.  I also didn’t wear any lipstick or lip gloss. Just a bit of clear lip balm, mostly Labello. And that was it. Looking back on it I really was Jon Snow. I knew nothing.

I did have a vision though. Of course I did. I just didn’t know how to execute it properly. I think that the look I was going for at the time was this:

Moody. Angry. But still pretty in a way. For this look I used MAC Carbon, a matte deep black, on my whole eyelid and then blended the color outwards, upwards and into my crease and smudged some along my lower lash line for a heavy smokey effect. Next I outlined my eyes with my Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion and – unlike during my high school years – applied a double coat of the Covergirl Flamed Out Mascara and a tiny bit of shimmery white in my inner eye corners for brightness. And then I filled in my eyebrows using the Lavera Eyebrow Pencil.

And that’s it. Or almost it. I kept my skin completely bare apart from a dusting of the Essence Stay All Day Translucent Fixing Powder and on my lips I used the lip balm end of the Estée Lauder New Dimension Plump + Fill Expert Lip Treatment.

Et voilà, meet high school Melissa.

Natasja’s triple pink look

Whereas teenage me tended to go a little overboard with the black my Two Dashes of Glam partner Natasja sometimes went all out with pink. For her high school look she used triple pink on the eyes, lips and cheeks and kept it soft and romantic. Talk about two extremes, her and I! Quickly visit Eyes Painted Black to check out Natasja’s look.

What is/was your signature high school look? Would you go back to your high school years if you could?

Get ready with me | A smokey look in neutrals with Smashbox

Yep, that’s right, I finally got around to filming a get ready with me video! The reason it took me so long to film an actual make-up video is that I don’t really like doing my make-up anywhere else but in the bathroom where I have a big mirror, good lighting and a sink. But ehh, I’m a beauty blogger and beauty bloggers film make-up videos, so I decided to suck it up and just do it already. I decided to kick off my get ready with me series (that is of course if you guys like the idea of turning this into a series) with a smokey make-up look in neutral colors featuring Smashbox on the skin, eyes, lips and cheeks. Take a look!
