Sharing The Swarovski Love Ahead Of Valentine’s Day

After a less than pleasant crap awful hellish experience with a certain cheap jewelry shop I decided I wanted to give some attention to a brand that can be trusted, does have morals and – most importantly – has some rrreally nice arm/neck/finger/[insertbodypartofyourchoice] candy: Swarovski. Chances are you already saw the Crystaldust cuff that I posted about in Wednesday’s Valentine’s Day feature:

… and the infinity necklace that I got a couple years ago and wear in many of my blog pics and videos:

But there’s more! Time to have a look at the Swarovski pieces in my collection that you haven’t seen yet:

Good stuff, eh? Can you tell I luh-luh-looooove rose gold jewelry? My favorite piece is probably the cuff bracelet. I think the dark crystals make it look a little less traditional and bit more edy, I like that.

Feeling inspired after seeing all this bling? It’s not too late yet for some last-minute V-day shopping! You might not be able to find these specific pieces – with the exception of the pink bangle they’re all from older collections – but if you’re still looking for a nice Valentine’s Day treat you should check out the new Swarovski Crystal Wishes collection. Karlie Kloss, one of my favorite models, fronts the campaign and everything look super pretty!

Do you own any Swarovski jewelry? Which of these pieces is your favorite?

Inexpensive Alternatives For Traditional(ly Pricey) Valentine’s Day Gifts

With just one week to go until V-Day I thought I’d put together a list of traditional Valentine’s Day gifts that won’t break the bank. No expensive designer perfumes, no costly getaways, no big-budget beauty buys, just seven wonderfully inexpensive alternatives for traditionally pricey Valentine’s Day gifts for him and her. Take a look!

Guylian chocolate sea shells belgian chocolate

Chocolatiers all over the world are rubbing their hands together right now looking at all those suckers people lining up and willing to spend tens of dollars/euros/whatevers on a tiny box of overpriced chocolates. Thing is, good chocolate doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. A big box of Guylian Belgian chocolates will cost you only a fraction of the price and they’re absolutely DELICIOUS. Their original chocolate sea shells are actually my number one favorite chocolates. Sure, they don’t come in a pretty heart-shaped box, but after one bite you’ll give exactly zero fucks about that, trust me.

No one says you have to spend a fortune on a high-end beauty gift for Valentine’s Day. With luxury brands like Dior and Chanel you’re mostly paying for the name and fancy packaging anyway. But there are plenty of great mid-range brands out there that offer really nice gift sets, like this unisex hand and lip duo from L’Occitane for example. I’m a big fan of the brand’s shea range and I think this little set makes a great little beauty gift. Another good example is Rituals: great gift sets at affordable prices.

There’s a story attached to this, so maybe I’m biased, but I personally think a single red rose is more romantic than a whole bouquet of flowers. All through high school my then boyfriend now husband got me a single red rose for Valentine’s Day. And I didn’t care that it was because he was on a student budget. I just thought it was really romantic. Every year I’d dry the leaves and save them. I still have years’ worth of dried roses in a lockbox somewhere.

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but I’m sure our wallets begs to differ. And that’s why I think Swarovski crystals are a nice alternative to real rocks. Yes, you’re still going to spend a good bit of money on a piece of Swarovski jewelry, but at least you’ll still be able to pay rent at the end of the month. This sparkly Crystaldust cuff is just one example of affordable Valentine’s Day bling, but I’ll be showing off more Swarovski goodies later this week, so make sure to keep your eyes open for that!

It’s crazy how expensive perfume can be, especially if you think about the fact that it’s “just” scented water. But luckily there are plenty of beauty brands out there that have great affordable fragrances for both men and women. One of my absolute favorites for Valentine’s Day this year is a recent discovery from LUSH: the Lust Solid Perfume.  The combination of jasmine, ylang ylang, rose, vanilla and sandalwood smells absolutely delicious and with a name like Lust it’s impossible not to get a little turned on.

My man and I love a wellness day as much as the next person, but fact is that a day at the spa is pretty pricey, especially if you get a private unit and get professional treatments. But why not turn your own bathroom/bedroom into a private spa and give each other a nice massage? Same level of relaxation, without having to bust out your credit card at the end. Now that’s a happy ending! I personally really like the massage oils from Rituals and Kneipp, but if you’re looking for a spill-free alternative (read: safe to use when not entirely sober) you might want to check out the LUSH Massage Bars. One of my favorites for Valentine’s Day is the rosehip, neroli and citrus-scented Love Spell Massage Bar. Hearts!

The hubby and I really enjoy going out to dinner at fancy restaurants, but we never do on Valentine’s Day. After we found out how restaurants jack up their prices on V-Day we decided we’d much rather cook each other/ourselves a romantic homemade meal. Get the mood going with sexy food like champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, feed each other a finger-licking dessert at the end of the meal and head straight to the bedroom after. Can’t do that at a restaurant!

Are you doing anything special for Valentine’s Day this year? Do you spend a lot of money on Valentine’s Day gifts?

Video | Make-Up + Jewelry Storage

I’m not gonna lie, I probably never would have shot today’s video if it wasn’t for my new GoPro Hero 5 Black. When the memory card for my new GoPro finally arrived I wanted to shoot some footage right away and since we probably won’t go skiing for another couple weeks I figured I might as well record a video for the blog with it. The only problem was that I didn’t have any inspiration. I already had my face on, so I couldn’t do a Get Ready With Me video. And since I’m an impatient little girl with zero restraint I obviously wasn’t going to wait until the next morning to try my camera. So in the end I decided to do a video on how I store my make-up and jewelry. I’ve been seriously downsizing my make-up and jewelry collection lately – freebies for all! – and in doing so I’ve come up with some rather creative storage options. Take a look!

Watch the video on YouTube for the best quality & remember to put the settings at 1080p HD

What do you say, should I shoot more blog videos with my new GoPro? How do you store your make-up and jewelry?

Make-Up Look | New Year’s Eve

If there’s one occasion to go all out with make-up it’s New Year’s Eve. Glitter! Sparkle! Falsies! The bigger the better! But not for me. At least not this year. After spending a week in Belgium for Christmas the hubby and I were all partied out and desperate for some alone time, so we decided to stay in and welcome the new year at our place with a home-cooked meal, (lots of) champagne and a festive dessert. And it was perfect!

Since we weren’t going out I had no reason to go all party crazy with my make-up, so I kept it predictable subtle with a matte smokey eye and nude lips.

On my eyes I’m wearing four shades from the Sleek Makeup Ultra Mattes V2 I-Divine Eyeshadow Palette: Maple on the eyelid, Paper Bag in the outer eye corners and crease, Pillow Talk in the inner eye corners and Villan against the lash line. I completed the look with black eye pencil (MAC Kohl Power Eye Pencil in Feline Black), black mascara (Maybelline Volum’ Express Colossal Smokey Eyes Mascara) and a very thin winged liner (Sephora Fingertip Eyeliner).

On my skin I’m wearing my beloved combination of the Kiss Me Sunkiller Super Lasting Base and the Morphe Banana Powder, and for blush I went with Rich Berry from the Smashbox L.A. Lights Blush & Highlight Palette. And for lips I decided to go with the Victoria Beckham Estée Lauder Lipstick in Brazilian Nude.

And, since we’re doing the full breakdown anyway, let’s also have a look at accessories. I’m wearing my favorite choker necklace from Born Pretty** – awesome find, if I do say so myself – together with a brand new pair of silver star earrings, also from Born Pretty**.

What make-up did you wear for New Year’s Eve? How did you ring in the new year?

I Am A Honey Bee

Back in September the amazingly talented Jessica did this portrait of me:

Pretty cool, right? Just imagine my reaction when I visited her website one day and found this awesome portrait of me on there! I think she did an absolutely amazing job with it and she totally nailed me (in an artistic painterly kind of way, not a girl-on-girl action kinda way). And don’t you just love those big bee earrings she gave me? My name is Melissa which comes from the Greek word μέλισσα and means honey bee, so I thought the bee earrings were a really nice touch. Needless to say when I spotted a pair of smaller yet otherwise very similar honey bee earrings in the Born Pretty online store** for just 2.50 USD I simply HAD to have them. Because they’re cute. And because of the relation to my name. And also a little bit because I wanted a reason to feature Jessica’s awesome painting on the blog and give her a little shout-out. So Jessica, this one’s for you!

What do you think of the painting? Do you like my new bee earrings?
