For today’s make-up look I went with one my favorite make-up combinations again: soft smokey eyes in warm fleshy tones, paired with peach blush and a subtle nude lip. Take a look!
On my eyes I’m wearing all Makeup Geek. Using Cosmopolitan (eyelid), Frappa (outer eye corner + crease), Artemis (inner eye corner) and Aphrodite from the Makeup Geek Manny MUA Eyeshadow Palette I created a subtle smokey eye in warm peachy tones.
You know what they say: great minds think alike. And when my blog friend Natasja and I were choosing a theme for this month’s Two Dashes Of Glam feature that certainly was the case. Since February is the month of love – in case you missed it, tomorrow is V-day – we both came up with the idea of letting our guys pick out our make-up. That’s right, this month the boys were in charge!

Since I always put the focus on my eyes I decided to start with eyeshadow. I told Tom that he had to pick a minimum of two colors, but that he could pick more if he wanted to. And boy did he take it seriously. I kind of expected him to just quickly point to two or three shades that caught his eye, but instead he really thought it through.
Him: “So what is all this stuff?”
Me: “What do you mean?”
Him: “This. What’s what? What do I pick from first? Which are the eyeshadows?”
Me: “Oh, no, this is all eyeshadow. You can pick from all of this.”
Him: “This is ALL eyeshadow?! Why is there so much of it?!”
Me: “I’ve actually been downsizing a lot lately…”
Him: “Really? Huh. Soooo which of these is the most expensive?”
Me: “That one probably.”
Him: “That one? But that’s the most boring one!”
Me: “Well, you don’t have to pick the most expensive eyeshadow, do you? Just pick a couple shades that you like!”
Him: “There’s so much brown.”
Me: “No, there isn’t.”
Him: “Yes, there is.”
Me: “JUST PICK SOME COLORS!”
After a couple minutes he ended up picking a shimmery silver gray from my Morphe 12S Soul Of Summer Palette as well as a matte beige and matte blackened brown from my Morphe 35OM Eyeshadow Palette. Guess my man’s a Morphe fan then!
Next we moved on to blush.
Him: “How many do I pick?”
Me: “Just one. How many blushes do you think a girl can wear at once?”
Him: “This is going to be easy. That one. Nothing too crazy.”
And “that one” ended up being the Clinique Blush Powder in Innocent Peach. Great choice, if you ask me, because I love peachy blushes and Innocent Peach is one of my current favorites!
Next up was lipstick.
Me: “I’ll start opening lipsticks and you just tell me when you spot one that you like, okay?”
Him: “No, I’m not going to pick until I’ve seen them all.”
Him: “Of course.”
Him: “Why do you have so many of the same colors?”
Me: “What do you mean?”
Him: “These for example, they’re all the same. And these. And these!”
Me: “No, they’re not. They’re all different nuances.”
Him: “Well, they all look brown to me.”
Me: “Just pick a lipstick, will you?”
Him: “Okay… this one. Bet you weren’t expecting that, huh! Are you happy with it?”
Me: “Yes, actually, because it’s not as baby pink as you probably think it is. It’s a color-adjusting lipstick that adapts itself to the pH of your lips, and it’s actually not that bright at all.”
He ended up picking a tinted lip balm rather than an actual lipstick: the MAC Tendertalk Lip Balm. Not that I’m complaining though, because I love Pretty Me Up!
When I asked Tom whether he liked what I had done with the products I was met with lukewarm typical male enthusiasm.
Me: “So what do you think?”
Him: “What I do I think of what?”
Me: “My make-up. These are the products that you picked.”
Him: “Oh. Yeah, it’s nice.”
Me: “Do you like it?”
Natasja’s boyfriend Dylan kept it timeless and classic with his make-up picks: red for the lips, gray and black for the eyes, and a soft pink cheek. Sounds very V-day proof! Quickly hop over to Eyes Painted Black to check out the look!
Is your man make-up savvy? Has your partner ever picked out your make-up?
For eyes I went with a peachy smokey eye featuring three shades from the amazing Makeup Geek x Manny MUA Eyeshadow Palette: Luna (eyelid), Frappa (outer eye corners & crease) and Artemis (inner eye corners). Pair with black eye pencil and mascara, et voilà, a subtle yet striking smokey eye in warm peachy colors. I don’t know about you, but I just loooooove shades like this, can’t get enough of them! I hate how much of the intensity gets “lost” on camera though. I feel like you have to go waaay overboard with make-up in order for it to really show up in a video.
I envy people who can do their make-up in just a few minutes. “Oh I need about five minutes to put my face on in the morning and I’m out the door!” Well, good for you. But all I can think of when I hear this is HOW? It already takes me five minutes to go through my eyeshadow stash and pick something. Another three for lipstick. So unless there’s some crazy time-warp technology I don’t know about there’s no way I can get my slap on in five minutes. Or could I? Last Sunday I decided to put it to the test.
I decided to skip foundation and concealer altogether (I did apply a tinted sunscreen base in the morning, but I counted that as skincare) and immediately started working on my eyes. After applying eyeshadow primer I combed my eyebrows and filled them in with eyebrow pencil. No shaping, just filling in little gaps. Next I outlined my upper and lower waterline with black eye pencil and moved on to eyeshadow. I decided to do a subtle two-tone smokey eye in warm mattes. I figured that if I was ever going to pull off this challenge I needed to use forgiving shades that didn’t require too much precision, so I applied a light warm brown on my eyelid, blended some warm rusty orange into that and applied a quick inner corner highlight.
Aaaaaand then I noticed that my five minutes were already up. Crap. Okay, so we’ll make it a 10-minute make-up challenge then, no biggie. I quickly applied mascara to finish my eye look and moved on to skin. I used some banana powder to mattify my skin and boost my complexion a bit and applied a little bit of loose MAC powder under my eyes. Since I only had a couple minutes left before I reached my new 10-minute deadline I decided to skip blush – I don’t really wear blush on a daily basis anyway – and immediately moved on to lips with a bit of tinted lip balm. Nine minutes and 51 seconds!
To be honest, I was a bit disappointed. I really thought that if I planned in advance, didn’t focus too much on my base and did a simple smokey eye I could pull it off in five minutes. Maybe if I had skipped the eyeshadow and had just used eye pencil and mascara it would have been more doable? Or perhaps I’m just slow. Or maybe I need/use more make-up than most folks, I don’t know… What do you think?
Can you do your make-up in five minutes? How long would it take you to do a look like this?
