Grunge makeup emerged as one of the defining beauty trends of the 1990s, built around a simple, unapologetic premise: make the eyes and lips the whole point. Smoky, smudged liner, deep matte skin, and lip shades that meant business.
The look has cycled back in a more flexible form — still bold, but now adaptable to how you actually want to feel. You can go full emo-dark or pull it toward something more polished and editorial. The bones are the same; the palette is yours to choose.
The Grunge Formula: Dark Eyes, Matte Base, Bold Lip
Step 1 — Build a matte base. Choose a foundation with a matte or satin finish. Grunge's signature "porcelain" base reads flat and smooth, so let your eyes and lips do the talking. Blend carefully into the hairline and jaw.
Step 2 — Contour deliberately. Grunge makeup relies on structure. Use a contour shade a few tones deeper than your foundation at the temples, cheekbones, and along the jaw. Keep edges blended — you're after dimension, not a line.
Step 3 — Set everything matte. A loose or pressed setting powder locks the base and kills any residual shine. This step earns its place.
Step 4 — Line the eyes boldly. Pick a pencil or liquid liner — pencil is easier to smudge; liquid gives a sharper edge. For a true grunge effect, apply to both the upper and lower lash lines. Pencil tends to work better for the waterline.
Step 5 — Smudge it out. Take a small smudge brush and soften the liner along both lids. Work it into the lash line rather than dragging it outward. The goal is smoky, not streaky.
The mistakes are the technique. Smudge freely, blend carelessly, arrive looking intentional.
Step 6 — Layer on eyeshadow. Pack your chosen shade onto the lid with a flat brush, then blend the edges with the smudge brush. Deep charcoals, plums, forest greens, and dusty browns are all fair game. Pat, don't sweep — intensity builds faster that way.
Step 7 — Curl lashes and add mascara. An eyelash curler before mascara opens the eye and stops the whole look from reading heavy. Apply at least two coats of mascara, letting the first dry before the second. Full, defined lashes are non-negotiable here.
Step 8 — Define the lips. Lip liner first, always. Draw precisely along your natural lip line, then fill the entire lip with liner — it acts as a base that helps lipstick grip and last.
Step 9 — Apply your lipstick. For a contemporary grunge finish, matte lipstick is the move: no shine, maximum depth. Go as dark or as muted as fits your base — burgundy, mulberry, near-black, or a dusty nude all work. For a more 90s-faithful version, swipe a clear or tinted gloss over a bright lip for that high-shine throwback effect.
Step 10 — Final tidy. Use a flat concealer brush with a small amount of foundation to clean up the edges of both eye and lip. This small step makes smudged liner look intentional rather than accidental.
The through-line: grunge rewards a light hand on everything except the eyes and lips. Get those two elements right and the rest falls into place.
